Mitski Mystifies Seattle at the Showbox SoDo

Mitski is on tour supporting her latest album, Be the Cowboy. “It’s Halloween, and the veil between worlds is thin,” Mitski mused Wednesday night before a festive audience (among them a number of cowboys). She is soft-spoken onstage, but her unflinching lyrics and innovative version of indie rock belie her reserved presence. She had the crowd dancing, swaying, sometimes shouting along to the music, a testament to her artistry—Mitski writes songs that are both tender and unapologetic, melancholy yet danceable. Whether it was what she described as the “thin-veil energy” of the night or just her enchanting vocals, the Showbox SoDo was under some kind of spell.
