Good Old War: Keith Goodwin (left) and Dan Schwartz with Kristina of

Keith Goodwin and Dan Schwartz of Good Old War made a stop in Seattle last week during a string of “not-so-secret” small shows up the west coast. I found out about these guys after their song, “Amazing Eyes,” found me and brought light to a very uninspired time in my life a few months go. The song opened up a whole new world for me as I immediately sought out, listened to and hung on every harmonized note in Good Old War’s catalog.

The best thing about it is that these two guys are just as inspiring in conversation as they are in song!  They were kind enough to talk to me about their upcoming album, Broken Into Better Shape. I know that you are going to love them!  Please enjoy our conversation below!

What started this string of “not-so-secret shows”?
Dan: Well, we figured since we’re out on the west coast and getting ready to put out the new record, that we might as well invite some people who might be interested in coming to see a sneak peek of the record and hear some of the songs that we’ve been working on!

What has the reaction been so far?
Dan: So good.

Keith: Pretty good, yeah.

Dan: We’re really excited because it’s been so positive.

Good Old War 04 2015 51Well, I’d love to talk about Broken into Better Shape! What are you guys most excited about when it comes to this record?
Keith: Right now, I’m just excited to give it to people! I think they’re great songs. We tried a bunch of new stuff, so there are new sounds on the record that I just want our people to hear – the people that enjoy our music – I just want to share it with them and see what they think.

What kinds of new things did you try?
Keith: It’s a bigger sound. There are more layers to the whole thing…synthesizers and a big drum sound and a lot of background vocal harmonies kind of weaving in the background.

What are you most proud of when it comes to this record?
Dan: I think it’s the variation of sounds that we were able to get, the variation of moods – and the completeness of every thought that we were able to actually accomplish.

Keith: And the songs. That’s what we’re always most proud of.

Dan: Exactly. It’s like the songs themselves go through so many different things. We were very thorough.

Good Old War 04 2015 67How did you guys meet?
Dan: Keith and Tim (who left the band before recording ‘Broken Into Better Shape’) were in a band called Days Away. I really liked that band. They were going to go on tour when I had just met them.  Keith liked the way I played. He was like, “hey, why don’t you come and play guitar for me and I’ll just sing?” Basically easing me in.

Keith and I started making acoustic demos of all of their songs and it started to sound really cool. So when they had another tour booked with Anthony Green, instead of going as Days Away after another member of the band left, we just started this new band!

Anthony was kind enough to let us open for him even though we didn’t even have a name… And we haven’t stopped since. We just really like what each other does and have this very natural chemistry.

I love your song, “Amazing Eyes.” I would love to hear some background on that song.
Keith: Well, it’s one of those songs about how you can be so close to somebody and still look at them like, “you’re a little bit crazy.” “I love you so much, but you’re crazy too…”

I’m married and I’ve been with the same girl since 8th grade and there’s definitely been a lot of that where it’s just like you love somebody so much but you still second guess them every once in a while.

That’s what the idea started from. It was one of the first songs that we ever wrote. We tried to write it for the first or second record. It just still didn’t feel like it was quite finished yet so we held onto it for awhile. I was happy to finally release it on Come Back as Rain.

Dan: We also tried it a bunch of different ways. Different verses…a whole bunch of different parts. We even, at one time, had it kind of as our version of “Hopelessly Hoping,” that Crosby, Stills and Nash song. Just lead guitar and the vocals. We finally just kind of struck it.

What’s next?
Keith: Dan’s getting married in a week and then he’s going to go on his honeymoon. So he’s out of commission for a couple weeks. Then we’re just going to be practicing and getting ready for our tour in July and for the album to come out. It’s going to be awesome at the shows, so we’re going to spend a lot of time practicing.

Dan: We’re going to get ready for a big tour!

Thank you so much, guys!
