Thompson Square

One of my favorite things about Thompson Square – comprised of husband and wife Keifer and Shawna Thompson – is how they take a positive and fun approach to music and life. Not to mention that they write catchy country songs that make every day sunny and bright!

It’s important to note that things haven’t always been easy for the pair, who had to cancel several shows last year after a severe vocal hemorrhage left Keifer on forced vocal rest for an extended period of time. When I asked him about it, he didn’t focus on the really difficult parts of it – instead, he talked about how much it allowed him to grow as a singer. “It’s kind of liberating, to be honest with you, so I’m kind of glad it happened to me.”

“I try not to talk as much as I used to,” he explained. “…But now, I breathe a lot different, I talk a lot different and I sing a lot different.”

“I’ve been shown a lot of cool tricks by other artists, my doctors and everything.” He continued, “So, I’m very conscious all the time of what I’m doing with my voice – whether it’s talking or singing. And that has really saved me. I’m stronger than I’ve been in years, it’s amazing!”

If you’ve seen a Thompson Square show, you know that they deliver fun like no other! No doubt, it’s because their love for singing and for life shines through with every note. The duo is set to play 3 shows near Seattle this week: in Aberdeen on May 15th, in Spokane on the 16th and in Auburn on the 17th! Come on out and have some fun! To purchase tickets, click here!

Keifer was kind enough to have a conversation with me a few days ago – please enjoy a few question excerpts from our interview below! See you at the show!

Hi Keifer! How’s the tour going?
Keifer: Oh it’s been great, it’s the most fun yet!

With everything you’ve been through, do you do anything special now to take care of your voice?
I do. I try not to talk as much as I used to. Talking is the worst thing you can do. But now, I breathe a lot different, I talk a lot different and I sing a lot different. I’ve been shown a lot of cool tricks by other artists, my doctors and everything. So I’m very conscious all the time of what I’m doing with my voice – whether it’s talking or singing. And that has really saved me. I can sing so much easier than I had been, I just kind of forgot how to do it right. It’s kind of liberating, to be honest with you, so I’m kind of glad it happened to me.

What’s your favorite song to sing that people either don’t know about or just haven’t heard yet?
Wow, hmm… Some of my favorites range from a song called “Diana,” by Merle Haggard to “She Talks to Angels,” by The Black Crowes, but you know, it changes all the time.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Yeah, we usually say a little prayer and have a little shot – a little pep talk and then we go out and do the show! That’s a thing we do every night. We get the blood flowing and the adrenaline pumping, that’s what we do!

Any messages for Seattle area fans?
Well, it’s crazy up there, people go nuts and I love it! We have a lot of friends up there and we may have a tremendous special guest, if it works out. We’re trying to work it out. It’s someone that we recently befriended and we’ve worked on some music together. It’s someone who lives up in your neck of the woods and we’re trying to make something special happen for you guys, so we’re just looking forward to you guys coming out and being crazy like us! We like to party and we know you guys do too, so we’re looking forward to it!

Thank you, Keifer!
