She eventually moved to LA, where she was able to dabble in the recording process and get involved with Fuse TV’s show, Rock Bottom. Her path eventually led to working with Miko. Three European DJ dance promotional chart #1s later and here we are. Natalie’s full-length record, Out of Control was released on March 3rd. Check out our Q&A session and be sure to listen to some previews from the album below!
I would love to hear about the moment you realized that music was
what you were made to do…when did you have that feeling?
When I was in 6th grade. I auditioned for the school play, Annie, as a
shy girl thinking there’s no way that I was going to get a part. Not
only did I get a part, I got the lead as Annie! The moment that I
stepped on stage for the first time in my life was when I knew that
music was what I was made to do. It was the most incredible feeling
I’ve ever had in my life.
Were you involved in a lot of musical activities when you were younger?
Yes. I started taking piano lessons when I was 4 yrs old. I was so
small that I had to sit on a pillow on the piano bench in order to
reach the keys. Then I moved on to play viola and I played bass
guitar, guitar and keyboards in bands as a teenager and sang backup
vocals. I actually remember writing my own songs in my basement
starting at 8 or 9 yrs old for my little brother Ryan, one of them
named “I’m Chewing On a Breakfast Bear.” That should be my #1 hit
(laughs).
Your music is so much fun! What was your initial approach to
recording your debut album? Did you have an idea of what you wanted it
to sound like when you went in?
Thanks! Yes I knew exactly what I wanted it to sound like going in. A
good friend of mine is a producer and I approached him saying that I
have some ideas for pop/dance songs that I really wanted to record. We
sat down and started writing and a year later we had more than enough
songs for an album so I decided to release ‘Out of Control’. I
recorded all of these songs for fun, not thinking that I might release
an album at some point. I wrote upbeat, energetic songs that I would
want to go out and dance to at a club. So yeah maybe thats why its a
fun album (laughs).
How do you typically approach your songwriting?
Its different for every song. I usually find myself driving, sitting
on a subway, making lunch, etc when an idea for a verse or chorus pops
in my head. Then I build off of that and write more lyrics. Sometimes
I’ll sit down at the piano, write a melody and sing over that. Then I
take it to my producer and we sit down and adjust some things or leave
it as it and build from it to complete the song. It sounds simple here
but can be a long process. There are so many layers and tracks to a
song and we have to sit down in the studio and write each and every
sound that makes up the record. It takes a lot of time and patience
but its one my favorite parts of being an artist.
What does ‘Out of Control,’ in its entirety, represent to you?
Going out, dancing, having fun, and enjoying life! Just about being in
your twenties and living it up haha. And dating. So many of those
tracks are about boys. For better or worse!
Is there anything that you’ve learned from the process of recording
your debut in terms of things you definitely want to try next time or
things you definitely don’t want to do next time?
Yeah absolutely. Writing music is a learning experience. ‘Out of
Control’ has a lot of my personality in it: originality, enthusiasm,
happiness, sex appeal, charisma, etc. Obviously I am who I am so those
traits and that sound is going to follow through to my next album. But
I do want to focus on writing more melodic, bigger choruses to get the
crowd moving even more. I can’t wait.
What was your experience working with Miko like?
Amazing! Miko is such an awesome person and producer and such a
talented guy. He actually found me on MySpace, loved my voice, and
asked if we could colab. So we got together and wrote “Let’s Go Dance”
and “XXX” which topped the European DJ charts at #1. “XXX” was also in
American Horror Story, episode 8. I remember that 1st phone call when
he told me we hit #1. I almost died! I literally think my knees went
weak.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Never take ‘no’ for an answer.
What are 3 albums that you can’t live without?
Madonna – ‘Like a Virgin’
Sigur Ros – ‘Takk…’
The King Khan & BBQ Show LP
What do you hope people take away from your music? Anything else
you’d like to add?
Just have fun with it! Sing and dance to it and forget about all your
worries. Life’s too short to stress over one guy or be jealous over a
girl you think dresses better than you. Be who you are and never try
to be someone your not. I’d like to say thanks so much for listening
to my music and please say hi to me on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and
MyYearbook. I manage all my fan pages and would love to hear from you.
