Gary Clark, Jr. One word…wow. His music is like Jimi Hendrix mixed with Stevie Ray Vaughan and then smattered with Gary’s own unique style and voice. His debut EP is four songs of soulful, bluesy, gritty southern rock.
Southern indeed, since Gary was born and raised in Austin, Texas. You can really hear his southern roots on the two opening tracks – the only two studio-recorded tracks – of the EP, “Bright Lights” and “Don’t Owe You A Thang.”
The last two tracks were recorded live. As expected, that adds a special dynamic to Gary’s sound. His impressive guitar prowess is easy to hear on every track, but it’s most apparent on the last track, “When My Train Pulls In” (well, duh. He plays a three minute guitar solo!).
The verdict: Do it. You and your friends will love him. Even your friends who don’t like the music you listen to will like Gary Clark, Jr.
