[tweetmeme]Papercranes is an alternative experimental band fronted by the ever remarkable Rain Phoenix. The band, consisting of Rain, Michael Tubbs, Dave Lebleu, Andy Lord, Michael Amish and Rob Buono, was originally formed in Florida but has since seen a revolving door of guest members including Flea (of The Red Hot Chili Peppers), Mark McAdam and Jack Irons.
Papercranes released Let’s Make Babies in the Woods in January of 2011. The record, which Rain describes as “experimental and true,” is exactly that: a journey through unconventional music and lyrics written in stream of consciousness. The strong repetition of percussion and the orchestral instruments enhance every song.
To compliment her artistic endeavours, Rain is also involved in the Gift Horse Project. The project is dedicated to raising money for artist supported charities and more. Give her a listen, read our interview and I hope you enjoy Papercranes!
Kristina: What kinds of music inspired you growing up?
Rain: David Bowie, The Beatles, Talking Heads, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, Steely Dan, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth.
What inspires you to write?
Nature, love, family, friends, sorrow, joy, politics, water, but mostly relationships.
How do you feel like your approach to recording and writing has changed since your first record?
Not that much in terms of writing. Stream of consciousness lyrics has pretty much always been a mainstay. The recording process has changed a lot in that I favor the experimental versus polished.
What does Let’s Make Babies in the Woods, in it’s entirety, represent to you?
Experimental and true.
Changing it up for a moment, what’s the best piece of advice that you’ve ever been given?
Don’t do what’s on the page. Don’t do what’s expected. Do what’s honest, and be who you are.
What are three albums that you can’t live without and why do you love them?
Talking Heads – Remain In Light, for its mix of straight rock and African influences.
The Smiths – Meat is Murder, the vocal/guitar melodies and angst.
Thomas Mapfumo – Hondo, cause he makes me feel happy.
A few current bands I like: Sister Crayon, Handsome Furs, Jose Gonzalez, Yuk, Jump Into The Gospel, Besnard Lakes, Warpaint, Bright Eyes, REM, The National, PJ Harvey, Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Luke Rathborne, Violens and All the artists who have participated in Gift Horse Project.
